Requirements by Operation Type

Overflight Permit

Remarks:

Director General of CAAN assigns a Flight Permission Number (FPN) upon approval. Quoting FPN is mandatory on all flight plans. CAAN working hours 0400Z to 1200Z.

Application Process:

Apply to CAAN Air Transport Department at least 48 hours prior to departure. States with bilateral/multilateral ASAs must apply 7 working days in advance using provided format. Pay USD 56.50 permission fee via bank voucher.

Landing Permit

  • Required: Yes
  • Authority: Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN)
  • Lead Time: 7 working days (flight should operate on 8th day)
  • Validity: 72 hours from initial requested schedule
  • Fees: USD 57 CAA processing fee for landing permit; airport landing and parking charges additional
Remarks:

Short-notice permission can be obtained subject to CAAN approval. Standard airworthiness, insurance, registration, and crew certification documentation required.

Application Process:

Apply to CAAN at least 7 working days prior. Submit aircraft airworthiness certificates, insurance documentation, registration certificates, and crew certifications. Short-notice requests at CAAN discretion.

Cabotage

Not permitted for foreign operators

General Remarks

Nepal charges modest fees for both overflight (USD 56.50) and landing (USD 57) permits. Terrain and weather in Nepal create unique operational challenges. CAAN assigns Flight Permission Numbers which must be quoted on all plans.
