Wind Sock

Wind Sock (also windsock or wind cone) is a conical fabric tube mounted on a swiveling pole at an airport that provides a visual indication of wind direction and approximate speed. It is one of the simplest yet most useful tools at any aerodrome.

  • Points in the direction the wind is blowing toward (downwind)
  • Fully extended: wind approximately 15 knots or more
  • At 5 knots, roughly one-quarter extended
  • Illuminated at night at airports with night operations
  • Located near runway thresholds and in the traffic pattern
  • Required equipment at all aerodromes per ICAO Annex 14
