Trip Fuel
Trip Fuel is the amount of fuel required to fly from the point of takeoff to the point of landing at the intended destination. It accounts for the planned route, altitude, aircraft weight, wind, temperature, and ATC constraints. Trip fuel is the baseline for all fuel planning.
- Includes fuel for taxi-out at departure, climb, cruise, descent, and approach
- Calculated by the Flight Management System or dispatch software
- Varies significantly with wind — a flight may need 20%+ more fuel westbound vs. eastbound across the Atlantic
- Step climbs during cruise can reduce trip fuel on long-haul flights
