Trim

Trim is the adjustment of aerodynamic forces on the aircraft so that it maintains a desired attitude (pitch, roll, or yaw) without the pilot needing to apply continuous force on the controls. Trim is set using small adjustable surfaces (trim tabs) or by repositioning the entire stabilizer.

Types:

  • Pitch trim: Most critical — adjusts elevator/stabilizer to maintain desired pitch attitude and speed
  • Rudder trim: Compensates for asymmetric thrust (engine failure) or crosswind
  • Aileron trim: Corrects for wing heaviness due to fuel imbalance

Properly trimmed aircraft greatly reduces pilot workload, especially during cruise flight.
