SID (Standard Instrument Departure)
SID (Standard Instrument Departure) is a published IFR flight procedure that provides a standardized route from the departure runway to the en-route airway structure. SIDs reduce radio communication, ensure obstacle clearance, and manage traffic flow in the terminal area.
- Conventional SIDs use VOR/NDB fixes; RNAV SIDs use GPS waypoints
- Contain altitude and speed restrictions at specific fixes
- Pilot-nav SIDs require the pilot to navigate; vector SIDs rely on ATC radar vectors
- Assigned by ATC or included in the clearance delivery
