RNP (Required Navigation Performance)

RNP (Required Navigation Performance) is a type of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) that requires the aircraft navigation system to monitor its own accuracy in real time and alert the crew if it cannot meet the required performance level. RNP adds a layer of safety beyond basic RNAV.

  • RNP values specify lateral accuracy in nautical miles (e.g., RNP 0.3 = 0.3 NM accuracy)
  • RNP AR (Authorization Required) enables curved approaches to runways surrounded by terrain
  • Requires certified avionics with onboard monitoring and alerting
  • Enables approaches to airports previously inaccessible in IMC
