PBN (Performance Based Navigation)
PBN (Performance Based Navigation) is an ICAO concept that shifts the basis for navigation from sensor-specific (VOR, NDB, etc.) to performance-based requirements. Instead of requiring specific equipment, PBN defines the accuracy, integrity, and monitoring requirements — the operator chooses the technology.
- Two categories: RNAV (without onboard monitoring) and RNP (with onboard monitoring and alerting)
- Navigation specifications include RNAV 5, RNAV 1, RNP 1, RNP 0.3, RNP AR
- The number indicates the lateral accuracy in nautical miles (e.g., RNAV 1 = 1 NM accuracy)
- Enables more efficient routes, reduced separation, and approaches to previously inaccessible airports
- ICAO's PBN implementation is one of the pillars of the Global Air Navigation Plan
