NOTAM
NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is a notice containing information essential to flight operations personnel about the establishment, condition, or change in any aeronautical facility, service, procedure, or hazard. The timely knowledge of NOTAMs is critical for safe flight operations.
NOTAMs cover a wide range of information including:
- Runway and taxiway closures
- Navigation aid outages (ILS, VOR, NDB)
- Airspace restrictions and temporary flight restrictions (TFRs)
- Obstacles (cranes, construction)
- Changes in airport operating hours
- Military exercises and aerial activities
- Volcanic ash advisories
In 2021, ICAO officially changed the expansion to Notice to Air Missions to adopt gender-neutral language. NOTAMs are distributed internationally through the Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) and are accessible via briefing services and aviation apps.
