Jet Blast
Jet Blast is the high-velocity stream of exhaust gases expelled from a jet engine. Jet blast can reach speeds exceeding 100 mph (160 km/h) at significant distances behind the aircraft, posing a serious hazard to ground personnel, vehicles, and unsecured objects.
Airports install jet blast deflectors at the end of runways near roads or buildings. Ground personnel follow safe distance guidelines that vary by aircraft type and engine power setting. The hazard area behind a widebody aircraft at takeoff thrust can extend over 400 meters.
