IFR
IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) are regulations and procedures for flying when visual references are insufficient, requiring the pilot to navigate and control the aircraft primarily by reference to cockpit instruments. IFR flight requires:
- An instrument rating for the pilot
- An IFR-capable and equipped aircraft
- A filed and accepted flight plan
- ATC clearance
IFR flights receive ATC separation services and can operate in clouds and low visibility. Most airline operations are conducted under IFR regardless of weather conditions.
