Holding Bay
Holding Bay (also called holding area or run-up area) is a defined area adjacent to a taxiway near the runway threshold where aircraft can hold while waiting for takeoff clearance. It allows other aircraft to pass and helps maintain traffic flow on the taxiway system.
- Provides space for engine run-up checks (especially for piston aircraft)
- Allows ATC to re-sequence departing traffic
- Multiple aircraft can hold simultaneously in a holding bay
- Marked with a holding position marking on the taxiway
- At busy airports, holding bays prevent taxiway congestion
