Holding Bay

Holding Bay (also called holding area or run-up area) is a defined area adjacent to a taxiway near the runway threshold where aircraft can hold while waiting for takeoff clearance. It allows other aircraft to pass and helps maintain traffic flow on the taxiway system.

  • Provides space for engine run-up checks (especially for piston aircraft)
  • Allows ATC to re-sequence departing traffic
  • Multiple aircraft can hold simultaneously in a holding bay
  • Marked with a holding position marking on the taxiway
  • At busy airports, holding bays prevent taxiway congestion
