GPWS

GPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System) is an aircraft safety system that alerts pilots when the aircraft is in immediate danger of flying into the ground or terrain. Modern enhanced systems (EGPWS/TAWS) use a terrain database and GPS position for predictive warnings.

GPWS/EGPWS modes:

  • Excessive descent rate
  • Excessive terrain closure rate
  • Altitude loss after takeoff or go-around
  • Unsafe terrain clearance when not in landing configuration
  • Below glide slope deviation
  • Predictive terrain and obstacle alerts (EGPWS)

The introduction of GPWS dramatically reduced CFIT accidents worldwide.
