Go-Around

Go-Around (also called Missed Approach) is the procedure of aborting a landing attempt and transitioning to a climb for another approach or diversion to an alternate airport. Go-arounds are a normal and safe procedure, not an emergency.

Common reasons:

  • Runway not in sight at decision altitude/MDA
  • Unstable approach (too fast, too high, not aligned)
  • Traffic or obstacle on the runway
  • Wind shear or severe turbulence
  • ATC instruction

Airlines encourage go-arounds as a proactive safety measure. The typical go-around rate is 1-3 per 1,000 approaches.
