Exhaust Gas Temperature

Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) is a critical engine instrument indication that measures the temperature of combustion gases as they exit the turbine section. It is the primary parameter for monitoring engine health and preventing thermal damage.

  • Displayed on the EICAS/ECAM engine display in the cockpit
  • EGT limits are specific to each engine type (e.g., CFM56 max EGT: ~950°C)
  • Exceeding EGT limits can cause turbine blade damage or failure
  • EGT peaks during takeoff (highest thrust demand) and during engine start
  • Trend monitoring: Gradual EGT increase over time indicates engine deterioration
  • Hot start: EGT exceeding limits during engine start — requires maintenance inspection
