Datalink

Datalink is a broad term for digital communication technologies that enable the exchange of data between aircraft and ground facilities (ATC, airline operations, weather services) without voice radio.

Types of datalink systems include:

  • ACARS: Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System — the original airline datalink for operational messages
  • CPDLC: Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications — ATC clearances via text
  • ADS-C: Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Contract — position reporting via satellite
  • ADS-B: Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast — position broadcasting via 1090 MHz or UAT
  • VDL Mode 2: VHF Digital Link for CPDLC and AOC messages

Datalink reduces radio congestion and provides a verifiable record of all communications.
