Dangerous Goods
Dangerous Goods (DG) — also called hazardous materials (HAZMAT) — are articles or substances that pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment when transported by air. The transport of dangerous goods by air is governed by ICAO Annex 18 and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), which is updated annually.
Dangerous goods are classified into 9 classes:
- Class 1: Explosives
- Class 2: Gases (flammable, non-flammable, toxic)
- Class 3: Flammable liquids
- Class 4: Flammable solids
- Class 5: Oxidizers and organic peroxides
- Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances
- Class 7: Radioactive materials
- Class 8: Corrosives
- Class 9: Miscellaneous (lithium batteries, dry ice, magnetized materials)
All personnel involved in accepting, handling, or transporting DG must receive recurrent training. The pilot-in-command must be informed of any dangerous goods on board, including their class, quantity, and stowage location.
