Crew Resource Management

Crew Resource Management (CRM) is a set of training procedures and philosophies designed to improve aviation safety by optimizing the use of all available resources — human, hardware, and information. CRM focuses on interpersonal communication, leadership, decision-making, and situational awareness within the flight deck and between the flight crew and other operational personnel.

CRM emerged from NASA research in the late 1970s following analysis of accidents where technically proficient crews made preventable errors due to poor communication and authority gradients. Key CRM principles include:

  • Effective communication and briefing
  • Shared situational awareness
  • Workload management and task delegation
  • Error recognition and management
  • Assertiveness (especially for junior crew members)
  • Decision-making under pressure

CRM training is mandatory for all commercial flight crews under ICAO, FAA, and EASA regulations and has been credited with significantly reducing human-factors-related accidents.
