Checklist

A checklist is a formalized list of procedures, actions, or items that flight crew must verify, complete, or confirm during specific phases of aircraft operation. Checklists are one of the most fundamental safety tools in aviation, ensuring that critical steps are not skipped due to distraction, fatigue, or complacency.

Standard checklists include:

  • Preflight: External walk-around and cockpit setup
  • Before Start: Systems configuration before engine start
  • After Start: Confirming engine parameters and system status
  • Before Takeoff: Final checks before entering the runway
  • After Takeoff / Climb: Configuration changes after departure
  • Cruise: Systems monitoring and fuel management
  • Descent / Approach: Briefing and configuration for arrival
  • Before Landing: Final gear, flaps, and systems verification
  • After Landing / Shutdown: Securing the aircraft

Checklists can be used as do-lists (reading each item and performing the action) or verification lists (performing actions from memory, then verifying with the checklist). Most airlines use the verification method for normal procedures.
