Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited

CAVU (Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited) describes ideal weather conditions for aviation: no clouds below 10,000 feet and visibility of 10 statute miles or greater. While not an official METAR term, CAVU is widely used in pilot communication to indicate perfect visual flying conditions.

In practice, CAVU conditions mean VFR flight is unrestricted, visual approaches are straightforward, and see-and-avoid traffic separation is most effective. These conditions are most common in arid climates, during high-pressure weather systems, and at times of low humidity.
