Carbon Offset

A Carbon Offset in aviation is a tradable credit representing a verified reduction of one metric ton of CO2 equivalent, purchased to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions produced by a flight.

ICAO's CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) requires airlines to offset emissions growth above 2019 baseline levels for international flights.

  • Offset projects include reforestation, renewable energy, and methane capture
  • Quality standards: Gold Standard, Verra (VCS), CDM
  • Airlines may offer voluntary offset programs to passengers
  • CORSIA is mandatory for international flights between participating states
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can also be used for CORSIA compliance
