Automatic Terminal Information Service

ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) is a continuous broadcast of recorded non-control information at airports with significant traffic. Each update is identified by a NATO phonetic alphabet letter (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.).

ATIS broadcasts typically include:

  • Active runway(s) and approach type in use
  • Surface wind, visibility, ceiling, and significant weather
  • Altimeter setting (QNH)
  • NOTAMs and special notices (taxiway closures, bird activity, etc.)
  • Transition level and any operational restrictions

Pilots must listen to the current ATIS before contacting ATC and report the ATIS identifier on initial contact (e.g., "with information Charlie").
