ATC

ATC (Air Traffic Control) is a service provided by ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace, maintaining safe separation between aircraft. ATC is fundamental to aviation safety, especially in congested airspace and around airports.

ATC is typically divided into several types of service:

  • Ground Control: Manages aircraft and vehicle movement on taxiways and ramp areas
  • Tower (Local Control): Controls takeoffs, landings, and aircraft in the traffic pattern
  • Approach/Departure Control: Handles aircraft within the terminal area (typically 30–50 nm radius)
  • En-Route (Center/Area Control): Manages aircraft in cruise flight between terminal areas

Controllers use radar, ADS-B, flight data processing systems, and radio communications to track and direct aircraft. The profession requires specialized training and certification, and controllers must maintain proficiency in English as the international language of aviation (ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements).
