Airway

Airway is a defined corridor of controlled airspace between two navigation fixes, established for IFR en-route navigation. Airways have a defined width (typically 8 nm either side of centerline), altitude limits, and direction of flight.

Types:

  • Victor airways (V): Low-altitude airways based on VOR, below FL180 (US)
  • Jet routes (J): High-altitude airways, FL180-FL450 (US)
  • RNAV routes (T/Q): GPS-based routes not dependent on ground navaids
  • Upper air routes (UL/UM/UN): ICAO designations for upper airspace routes
