Kingsford Smith Intl
A Journey Through Time
1933 — 2000
Sydney Airport was officially named Kingsford Smith Airport in 1933 after the pioneering aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who made the first transpacific flight from the US to Australia in 1928.
The International Terminal opened in 1970 to handle the new Boeing 747 jumbo jets. Sydney became the primary gateway for the famous "Kangaroo Route" between Europe and Australia.
A major expansion was completed for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, including a new rail link. The airport's proximity to the CBD (just 8 km) remains both its greatest asset and its primary constraint.
