Melbourne Intl
A Journey Through Time
1970 — 2023
Melbourne Airport opened at Tullamarine on 1 July 1970, replacing the downtown Essendon Airport. It was Australia's first airport designed for the jet age with curfew-free 24-hour operations.
The SkyBus express service and new international departures hall opened, and Melbourne became the fastest-growing major airport in Australia, challenging Sydney for traffic.
Melbourne Airport began construction on a dedicated rail link to the CBD — one of the last major airports in the developed world without a train connection — scheduled for completion in 2029.
