1950s
1959

Sheremetyevo Airport opened on 11 August 1959, initially handling only domestic Aeroflot flights. Its first international route, to East Berlin, launched in 1960.

1980s
1980

Terminal 2 (the iconic "glass box") was built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, handling all international arrivals. It became the symbol of Soviet-era air travel for Western visitors.

2010s
2010

Terminal D opened as Aeroflot's SkyTeam hub, and Sheremetyevo became Russia's busiest airport. The Aeroexpress rail link cut travel time to Moscow's city centre to 35 minutes.
