Aeroporto Salgado Filho opened in 1940 on the banks of the Guaíba River, named after Joaquim Pedro Salgado Filho, Brazil's first Minister of Aeronautics.

2000s
2001

A new passenger terminal was inaugurated in 2001, modernising operations for the growing demand from southern Brazil. The airport sits unusually close to the city centre, just 6 km away.

2020s
2024

The airport was severely impacted by catastrophic floods in May 2024 that devastated the Porto Alegre region, forcing a complete shutdown and major reconstruction effort.
