1952

Aeroporto do Galeão opened in 1952 on Governador Island in Guanabara Bay, originally as a Brazilian Air Force base that was adapted for commercial operations.

1970s
1977

The current international terminal (Terminal 1) was inaugurated in 1977, designed by the renowned architects of Sérgio Bernardes. It was renamed Tom Jobim International Airport in 1999.

2010s
2014

A major renovation was completed for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics, including a new Terminal 2 and modernised facilities to handle 37 million passengers annually.
