Schwechat
A Journey Through Time
1938 — 2012
Flughafen Wien-Schwechat was built in 1938 on the site of a former Heinkel aircraft factory, initially as a military airfield during the German annexation of Austria.
After reconstruction and expansion in the 1950s, Vienna Airport became the primary gateway to Central Europe and the Iron Curtain, with Austrian Airlines connecting East and West.
The Check-in 3 terminal and Skylink expansion opened in 2012, modernising the airport with a seamless one-roof design and positioning Vienna as a hub for travel to Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
