1960s
1961

Aeroporto di Fiumicino opened on 15 January 1961 for the 1960 Rome Olympics, replacing the downtown Ciampino airport for commercial operations. It was named after Leonardo da Vinci.

1990s
1991

Terminal 3 opened as the dedicated international terminal, and Fiumicino became Alitalia's main hub for intercontinental operations across Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

2010s
2016

Fiumicino became the first airport in continental Europe to receive a 4-Star Skytrax rating after a €12 billion renovation that included new boarding areas and premium lounges.
