1928

Newark Metropolitan Airport opened on 1 October 1928, making it the first major commercial airport in the New York metropolitan area — predating both LaGuardia and JFK.

1970s
1973

Newark was renamed Newark International Airport and underwent a major modernisation in the 1970s that included the construction of the current three-terminal layout.

2000s
2001

Following the September 11 attacks, the airport was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport in December 2002 in honour of the Statue of Liberty visible from its runways.
