1958

Nairobi Embakasi Airport opened in 1958, replacing the older Eastleigh Airport. It was renamed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in 1978 after Kenya's founding president.

2010s
2017

Kenya Airways and KLM's joint venture made JKIA the primary hub for connecting traffic between Europe and East/Southern Africa, earning Nairobi the nickname "Africa's connecting capital."

2020s
2022

A new passenger terminal expansion project was launched to increase capacity from 7.5 million to 20 million passengers, supporting Kenya's position as East Africa's aviation hub.
