Gatwick
A Journey Through Time
1930 — 1988
Gatwick Aerodrome opened in 1930 as a small commercial airfield in Surrey. The original terminal, known as "The Beehive" for its circular design, was one of the first purpose-built airport terminals in the world.
Queen Elizabeth II opened the rebuilt Gatwick Airport on 9 June 1958. It was the first airport in the world with a direct rail link to a city centre via the Gatwick Express.
The North Terminal opened in 1988, and Gatwick established itself as the world's busiest single-runway airport — a record it held for over three decades.
