Keflavik
A Journey Through Time
1943 — 2023
Keflavik Airport was built in 1943 by the US military during World War II as a strategic North Atlantic staging point. After the war, it became Iceland's primary international airport.
Icelandair pioneered the "Icelandair Stopover" programme, allowing transatlantic passengers a free multi-day layover in Iceland — turning Keflavik into a unique tourism gateway.
A new terminal extension opened to handle the surge in Icelandic tourism. Keflavik processed over 7 million passengers — remarkable for a country of just 380,000 people.
